Why the death penalty on casey anthony?

I see kids up here murdered by the parents all the time and the mom's get like two years in minimum security, even if the kid was tortured for years. Kids have little clout in the legal system; yet Casey anthony puts Caylee quietly to sleep and gets the death penalty? Is it because of the publicity?
